There are now five billion-dollar earners at the worldwide box office this year and Disney has a hand in four of them. It has just been announced that The Lion King has become Disney’s fourth film this year to cross $1 billion.
The film hit the milestone after less than three weeks in theaters. As of today, The Lion King has grossed $361 million at the domestic box office and $638 million from overseas territories. The film has been especially strong in China ($115 million) along with the United Kingdom ($48 million) & Brazil ($44 million).
The Lion King follows Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame & Aladdin in the Disney billion+ club. If we want to get technical, they can claim to have five billion dollar films if we count Spider-Man: Far From Home (Marvel shares the rights with Sony Pictures). The news comes on the heels on another personal best for Disney. Last weekend, the record for global ticket sales was achieved by the Mouse House. Who did they beat? Well, they beat themselves as their global take has now reached $7.67 billion, topping their own record from 2016 of $7.61 billion. Disney still has Frozen 2, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on deck so they have more money to count later this year.
