Split Scares Off Competition To Stay Number One

I figured Split would most likely remain the top spot this weekend but I was really surprised by how well it held up in week two. With a gross of $26.26 million, the film drops a pretty slim 34% week to week. Horror films tend to suffer larger drops, even if they are generally well received, so this hold is very impressive. The domestic gross is just shy of $78 million with $100 million a definite destination at this point. Keep in mind this was made for $10 million so this was already a solid investment after its opening night last week. Internationally, Split brought in an estimated $14.8 million from 31 territories for an early international total of $23.7 million. This weekend included #1 openings in Germany and Spain with $2.6m and $2.1m debuts respectively. The film’s global gross currently stands at $101.7 million.

A Dog’s Purpose fought off a lot of controversy coming into its opening weekend with a solid second place showing of $18.38 million. This has to be considered a good start considering all the bad press surrounding the film. It was tracking a bit higher before the now infamous TMZ video was leaked but opening day audiences gave the film an “A” CinemaScore so the target audience should push the film to profitability.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter had to settle for fourth place with an opening of $13.8 million. This is the smallest opening for the entire franchise (the previous low point was the first film in 2002 with $17.7 million) but the real money for this franchise isn’t made on the domestic front. The franchise has always been a huge international player. Its weekend global gross stands at $78.35 million which pushes the franchise over the $1 billion mark in international grosses. The franchise continues to be a solid investment despite diminishing returns on the domestic front.

Hidden Figures & La La Land definitely saw some post-Oscar nomination love this weekend. Hidden Figures dropped a slim 11% week to week with a gross of $14 million. The $25 million film has now grossed $104 million at the box office. La La Land jumped 43% week to week with a gross of $12 million. The domestic gross stands at $106.5 million and $223 million worldwide.
