It’s that sequel you always heard was going to happen but you won’t believe it until you see it. Well, it looks like it’s finally happening because Paramount Pictures has officially set Craig Brewer to direct Coming to America 2.
Eddie Murphy is poised to reprise his role as Akeem, the pampered African prince who became bored of potential marriage partners in the kingdom too in awe of him, and who traveled to Queens to go undercover and find a woman with a strong will that he could respect.
Brewer seems like an obvious choice since he just directed Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name & apparently, he was eager to work with him again. Kenya Barris, of Black-ish fame, is rewriting the script from original Coming to America writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield.
In the sequel, Akeem learns about a long lost son and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda. The hope is to bring back other original cast members such as Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, John Amos & James Earl Jones.
There is no set release date but the hope is to have production start sometime this year.
