The African American American Film Critics Association has named its pick for best film of the year and that honor goes to Jordan Peele’s, Us.
Us received three total wins which also included Peele for Best Director and Lupita Nyong’o for Best Actress. President/Co-Founder Gil Robertson of the AAFCA had this to say about honoring the film:
“Jordan Peele continued to raise the bar in horror specifically and film overall. With Us, he once again upended the horror genre. His centering of a black nuclear family determined to survive in a complex storyline in a genre where black family units have historically been unseen in extraordinary. He continues to push previously set boundaries with bold storylines that bring a refreshing perspective to cinema overall and the genre specificially. The film’s $255 million global gross is yet another example that inclusive filmmaking resonates big at the box office and it also resonated critically with our members who awarded the film with our highest honors.”
Taking home other awards included Eddie Murphy with Best Actor honors for Dolemite Is My Name and Best Supporting Actor and Actress notices went to Jamie Foxx for Just Mercy and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Dolemite Is My Name. Rounding out the top five best films of 2019 for the AAFCA were Dolemite Is My Name, Just Mercy, Clemency, and The Irishman. The rest of the top ten included Queen & Slim, Waves, Parasite, Atlantics, The Farewell, and Harriet.
