Eddie Murphy is continuing to deepen his relationship with Netflix. The streaming giant has now earned the rights to make a sequel to Beverly Hills Cop.
The move comes on the heels of Murphy earning raves for his turn in Netflix’s Dolemite is My Name. The film has earned Murphy some of the best reviews of his career and rumor has it that Murphy is planning some kind of comedy special on the platform as well so it makes perfect sense for Murphy to continue his creative growth with the streamer.
The sequel would have Murphy reprising his role as Axel Foley, a street-smart Detroit cop who finds himself transplanted to the classy streets of Beverly Hills. The first two films, particularly the original, were huge box office hits while 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a commercial and critical disappointment. Paramount Pictures released the first three films but will be licensing the rights to Netflix.
The move from Paramount was confirmed by CEO of Paramount’s parent company Viacom, Bob Bakish, during a call with the analysts this morning. The studio is also still a part of the Eddie Murphy business as they will be releasing Coming 2 America, a sequel to the 1988 hit Coming to America, in 2020.
