Annabelle Comes Home To $7.2 Million On Opening Day

Annabelle Comes Home is continuing an impressive box office start after garnering $3.5 million in Tuesday night previews before going wide yesterday.

On its first full day of release, Annabelle Comes Home grossed an impressive $7.2 million. This is down from The First Purge‘s $9.3 million start last year but that film launched on July 4 and had the benefit of the holiday. Some box office experts say the 5-day gross will be about $28-30 million which isn’t bad considering the film cost $27 million to make and should continue to play well into next week.

The potential bad news is that the early exit polls for the film aren’t particularly strong. The film scored a “B-” CinemaScore which is pretty ok for horror but it’s from the “B” earned by Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation. PostTrak has it at  2 1/2 stars and a 42% recommend with females over 25 (22%) giving it the best grades at 68%. In comparison,  Annabelle: Creation had 4 stars in its Posttrak and a 56% definite recommend. Annabelle Comes Home has a 42% definite recommend.

I get why Annabelle Comes Home opened earlier in the week, mostly to gain some traction before Spider-Man: Far From Home dominates next week but maybe a Friday launched would’ve suited best as it likely would’ve matched or exceeded the start of Annabelle: Creation. It’s still early in the game so this will definitely be one to watch.
