Black Panther Pacing Ahead Of Captain America: Civil War In Advanced Ticket Sales

Marvel’s Black Panther is looking to be the new king of the box office jungle. Even before the film has hit box office tracking, advanced ticket sales have it pacing ahead of Captain America: Civil War. Pre-sale tickets went on sale on Monday night and it has become Fandango’s best-selling MCU title in the first 24 hours of presales. Captain America: Civil War kicked off the opening of summer 2016 during the first weekend of May with a massive $179 million.

There really is no direct correlation between advanced ticket sales and a film’s opening weekend but this is a Marvel title and the rush for advanced tickets could indicate a huge opening is in play here. Black Panther opens on February 16, which is part of the four-day President’s Day holiday weekend and adjacent to Valentine’s Day which falls on a Wednesday this year. As was proven with the release of Deadpool during this release cycle, romantics don’t just crave the Fifty Shades franchise for date night. There is potential for Black Panther to really exceed expectations when it opens next month.

Right now the studio is being modest and predicting an $80-85 opening with “a shot at $100 million” but as we’ve seen with Marvel films in the past, they tend to perform beyond the studios’ “modest” expectations.
