Abominable Becomes Universal Pictures’ Seventh Film This Year To Top The Box Office

Although this weekend was a bit quieter at the box office, Abominable takes the top spot and gives Universal Pictures some bragging rights as well.

Abominable grossed $20.6 million this weekend and becomes the third original film after Us & Good Boys to top the box office this year. This is also the seventh number one film for Universal which gives them the most number-one openings in 2019. Abominable still has work to do given its $75 million budget but the “A” CinemaScorea and 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes suggests that the film could have legs moving forward. Internationally, after opening in a couple of markets last weekend, Abominable is now playing in 30 overseas territories and brought in an estimated $8.8 million this weekend. Leading the way was a $1.98 million opening in Mexico, followed by a $1.45 million weekend in Brazil. The film still has several markets yet to open including Italy and Russia next weekend.

Dropping to second is Downton Abbey with $14.3 million. That’s a 53.8% decline from its opening weekend and while it does appear that the film was a bit of a one-weekend wonder, Downton Abbey had solid weekday grosses after its opening weekend and I honestly think the film will level off in the weeks ahead. The drop prevents a $100 million domestic gross but given the $20 million budget, the film is already in solid shape. Downton Abbey has a domestic total of $58.3 million and the film also added another $10 million internationally for an overseas gross totaling $48.6 million and a worldwide tally that now stands at an impressive $107.1 million.

Hustlers rises from fifth to third place this weekend with a gross of $11.3 million. That’s a slim drop of 32.2% from its second weekend and this small decline now guarantees the film will see $100 million in the next couple of weeks. The film has grossed $80.5 million at the domestic box office and it’s very close to becoming the second highest-grossing live-action film of Jennifer Lopez’s career (Monster-in-Law currently is second with $82.9 million). Hustlers will end up being the highest-grossing live-action film of her career in due time as its a lock to outgross the $94 million of Maid in Manhattan.

Coming in fourth is It: Chapter Two with $10.2 million. That’s a drop of 39.8% and it’s the best hold the film has had after its opening weekend. It: Chapter Two has now grossed $193.7 million at the domestic box office and $200 million is soon in its sights. Internationally, the film added another $11 million this weekend giving it a $223.5 million overseas total and a $417.4 million global gross.

Rounding out the top five is Ad Astra with $10 million. That’s a drop of 47.3% and it’s a better hold than I was expecting for the film, given its “B-” CinemaScore but it’s still hefty enough to make it clear that it won’t be matching its $80-100 million budget stateside. The film has grossed $35.3 million at the domestic box office and the film also added another $18 million this weekend from 50 markets for a $53.5 million international total and an $89 million global tally.

In other box office news, Judy made a great impression in seventh place with a gross of $2.9 million from only 461 locations in its limited release launch. The film expands even further this week and the “A” CinemaScore indicates that this may be one to watch.
