Ralph Breaks The Internet Remains Number One During Slow Post-Thanksgiving Weekend

The post-Thanksgiving weekend saw its usual lull at the box office but Ralph Breaks the Internet maintained its number one position for the second weekend in a row.

Ralph Breaks the Internet dropped a little harder than expected but still came out on top with an estimated $25.7 million. That’s a drop of 54.2% and actually has it pretty much in line with Disney’s Moana in terms of gross at this point of release. Ralph should rebound through the holidays, much like Moana and Coco did on their way to $200 million at the domestic box office. Ralph Breaks the Internet has a domestic total of $119.2 million to date and internationally the film added $33.7 million this weekend for an international gross that now totals $87.7 million and $207 million at the worldwide box office.

Moving up to second is The Grinch, which continues an impressive box office run with an estimated $17.7 million. That’s a drop of 41.7% and it’s a solid hold considering it faces direct competition from Ralph Breaks the Internet. The film’s domestic total has reached $203.5 million and that’s all on a $75 million budget. The Grinch has a few more weekends to make some money before the holidays and now the next goal is $300 million by the time it’s all said and done.

Dropping to third is Creed II with an estimated $16.8 million. That’s a drop of 52.7% and that was to be expected after the larger 5-day gross from the Thanksgiving holiday. The film has grossed $81.1 million to date and it’s $17 million ahead of where the original film was by this time of its run. Internationally, Creed II started playing in a couple of smaller markets last weekend, but this weekend expanded into 29 total markets and delivered an estimated $10 million for an international total that stands at $11.4 million. The top market was the UK where it brought in an estimated $3.9 million. The film won’t really begin playing in most key markets until the new year, beginning with Mexico on January 1 followed by France (Jan 9), Russia (Jan 10), Japan (Jan 11), Germany (Jan 24), Italy (Jan 24), Brazil (Jan 24) and Spain (Jan 25).

In fourth, we find Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald which grossed an estimated $11.2 million. That’s a hefty drop of 61.9% and now its chances of reaching $200 million at the domestic box office are in question. The film has grossed $134.3 million at the domestic box office but it’s still a huge hit internationally where it has topped the global box office for three straight weekends as it added another $40.2 million internationally this weekend for an overseas running total that is now $385.3 million for a global gross just shy of $520 million. I think the franchise continues but Warner Bros. will definitely rethink its marketing strategy for the film in the states.

Rounding out the top five is Bohemian Rhapsody which grossed an estimated $8.1 million. The film dropped 42.1% as it continues a pretty impressive run at the box office. The musical biopic has grossed $164.4 million to date and I think it’s slowing down a bit to the point where $200 million isn’t likely but it will be close as it should also benefit from the December good tidings that helps out many films during the holiday season. The film is rocking audiences internationally as well, adding an additional $37 million this weekend from 72 markets for an overseas total that now tops $375 million and a global gross just shy of $539 million.
