Zachary Levi is going from Shazam! to playing a real-life Hall of Famer. The actor is set to play football player Kurt Warner in American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story. The Erwin Brothers — Jon Erwin and Andrew Erwin — will direct the film, which is expected to begin production this year.
The film sounds like it’s going the faith-based route because the Erwin Brothers are known for tackling that kind of material while it’s being produced by I Still Believe producer Kingdom Story Company, which was the K.J. Apa faith-based film that opened just a week before the movie theater closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Erwin Brothers will also produce through their Kingdom banner, alongside Mark Ciardi and Kevin Downes. Kurt and Brenda Warner will co-produce.
David Aaron Cohen, Jon Gunn, and Jon Erwin penned the screenplay, which is based on interviews with Warner and his memoir, “All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football and the First Miracle Season”. It chronicles the incredible true story of Kurt, who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to become a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and Hall of Fame quarterback.
Levi was best known for starring in the hit NBC series Chuck but he gained more notoriety after taking on the title role in the DC Comics movie Shazam!
