Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are setting dates for some high profile sequels on their docket.
Sing 2 will once again enjoy some holiday play when it’s released on Christmas Day, 2020. It should prove to be a big box office day for the film since Christmas falls on a Friday that year.
Minions 2 is moving up a week from July 10, 2020, to Fourth of July weekend which would give it the same weekend of release as the first film back in 2015. Secret Life of Pets 2 also wants to rule the Fourth of July weekend by moving its release date by a year from July 13, 2018, to July 4, 2019.
Together, the grosses of the original films is a staggering $2.5 billion. Last year’s The Secret Life of Pets, which bowed on July 8, ended up grossing $368.3M domestically and has taken in a whopping $875.4M globally. Minions, released the previous year also in July, is Universal/Illumination’s billion-dollar baby with $1.159B — $336M of that collected stateside. And Sing, which was released late last year, on December 21, has so far grossed $425M worldwide.
