Sony Pictures has some faith in its new reboot of The Grudge. The studio has moved the film to an earlier release date of summer 2019.
The film was originally set for release at the end of summer 2019 on August 16 but will now haunt theaters on June 21. It’s a testament to the studio’s faith in the film as it’s getting the widest release possible in the heart of the summer movie season. On its new day, The Grudge will be counterprogramming to Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 4. Sony recently decided to shift Angry Birds 2 on August 16 instead. On that old date, there’s another R-rated title, Universal’s comedy Good Boys, and Open Road still has Play Mobil dated on that day as well.
The new incarnation of the film stars Andrea Riseborough, Betty Gilpin, John Cho, Jacki Weaver, William Sadler, Demian Bichir, and Lin Shaye and is being helmed by Nicolas Pesce. Lin Shaye stated in an interview recently that it’s the scariest horror film she has ever starred in. The film follows the plot thread of the original which focuses on a house that is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death.
There was a 2004 American remake, based on the Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge, that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar which was a massive hit upon release. The film grossed $187 million worldwide on a $10 million budget.
