Marvel is ready to conjure up a sequel to Doctor Strange and they will have a familiar face at the helm. Director Scott Derrickson, who directed the first film, will return to direct the sequel.
Derrickson, who also co-wrote the original, has quietly finalized a deal to direct the new installment and a search for a writer to pen the script is currently underway. Sources say that negotiations were fairly simple and that the studio and director are in the endgame now.
Benedict Cumberbatch is also set to return as the title character and will be joined by Benedict Wong and most likely Rachael McAdams, who played his love interest in the first film. Strange was last seen in Avengers: Infinity War, the $2 billion-grossing first part of the conclusion of the Avengers franchise which is set to end with Avengers: Endgame.
The sequel to Doctor Strange would likely be part of Phase Four for Marvel, a phase they are being very tight-lipped about. The plan is for the Doctor Strange sequel script to be finished in 2019 with a 2020 production start.
Scott Derrickson began his career in horror with films such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister before moving on to 2016’s Doctor Strange which grossed $677.7 million at the worldwide box office.
