It looks like Spider-Man: Far From Home isn’t seeing the summer box office jinx as it grosses record numbers on its opening day.
The latest Spider-Man sequel grossed $39.3 million on its Tuesday opening day which is a record for a Tuesday in July. The number tops the Tuesday opening day of Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man which posted $35 million before legging out to a holiday weekend opening of $137 million. Some have questioned the Tuesday launch, especially with most locations having discount Tuesdays that can cause soft numbers but that factor didn’t really impact the opening all that much. A third of Tuesday’s business was made from Imax and PLFs so fans were opting for the more expensive screenings to see the film the way it was meant to be seen. Far From Home is in full play at 4,634 screens, which is the widest July release ever. Wednesday numbers may be affected by people opting to travel out before the July 4 holiday but we’ll have to wait and see how it affects the Wednesday total but Far From Home is off to a great domestic start at the box office.
Midsommar opened in Tuesday previews last night and grossed $1.1 million at 1,951 theaters and expands to 2,707 locations by Friday. The film begins to go wide today and this is a solid start for a film that is bound to be polarizing. I’ve seen online reactions praising it and tearing it a new one so it will be interesting to see how its opening weekend plays out. The new A24 horror film from Ari Aster, director of the equally polarizing Hereditary, had early exits of 3 stars, and a 50% definite recommend.
