I stated in the box office roundup that Black Panther would likely rise once the final numbers were released after initial estimates and the film did so in tremendous ways.
The original three-day opening came in at $192 million but has since increased to $201.8 million. It’s still the fifth-biggest domestic opening of all time, and the second-biggest for a superhero movie behind fellow Marvel film, The Avengers ($207.4 million).
The four-day President’s Day total also increased from $235 million to $242 million. That allowed it to pass Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($241.6 million) to earn more in its first four days than any movie in history at the North American box office, save Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($288.1 million), not adjusted for inflation. Black Panther’s surge was thanks to the biggest Monday in history with $40.2 million, beating Force Awakens’ $40.1 million.
Globally the film opened to a massive $426.6 million and with an “A+” CinemaScore, word of mouth should continue to be huge. Moviegoers were seeing the film multiple times over the weekend and that trend could continue for weeks to come.
