Ralph Breaks The Internet Set To Lead The Post-Thanksgiving Void

The void is about to hit the box office. Studios opt not to open new releases, with the exception of lackluster films dumped to find whatever audience they can get, after the Thanksgiving holiday so look for all the holdovers to likely maintain their positions from the week before.

Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet will most likely maintain its number one position easily this weekend. If the animated sequel sees a similar hold to the original Wreck-It Ralph, it could earn as much as $38 million in its second week of release. That would mark a drop of just 33%, an impressive feat, but one the fantasy adventure could pull off again given the movie’s glowing word of mouth. Previous post-Thanksgiving drops for Disney efforts include 45% for Moana and 50% for Coco and given that the Ralph brand isn’t new like those films were, I think a drop in the high-30s is likely for Breaks the Internet.

Likely to maintain it’s number 2 position is Creed II which is also seeing some glowing word of mouth from audiences. The original Creed dropped 49.4% from its inflated Thanksgiving weekend but leveled off due to positive word of mouth which allowed it to gross $109.7 million at the domestic box office. Creed II is likely not to see as strong of a hold as Ralph Breaks the Internet because it’s not a top choice for families but it’s still a contender with audiences looking for more adult fare. I’m predicting a second weekend of about $17-20 million.

The lone newcomer of the weekend is The Possession of Hannah Grace which is an R-rated supernatural horror film starring Shay Mitchell. Sony’s Screen Gems is distributing the film to 1,700 venues this weekend and, of course, there are no reviews as of yet but I’m expecting a fairly rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was made on the cheap for $10 million using small and inexpensive Sony a7s II but I don’t think it will cover its budget by the end of its run and may find its like on home video. I’m predicting about $3 million for the weekend and then a quick disappearance from multiplexes.

The post-Thanksgiving frame and the week after is traditionally slow at the box office so it allows films that didn’t quite hit on opening weekend, to find an audience. Films such as Widows, Fantastic Beats: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Green Book & Robin Hood will be looking to gain traction until Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse opens on December 14.
