The Girl on the Train opened at number one over the weekend with $24.7 million. It was slightly below tracking which had it going as high as $30 million at one point. The film was hurt a bit by negative reviews (44% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes) and its B- opening night CinemaScore doesn’t bode well for legs.
The other noteworthy new release, The Birth of a Nation, opened in sixth place with $7.1 million. This is pretty much how it was tracking and its future prospects really depend on word of mouth. It has had to deal with the negative headlines surrounding its star and director but the film itself is solid (79% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). It’s hard to tell at this point what impact the bad media attention had on the film but i would think it played some kind of role in the film not truly breaking out over the weekend.
