One Day At A Time Revived For Season 4 At Pop

Praise the TV miracle Gods! After being canceled by Netflix after three seasons, One Day at a Time will be revived for a fourth season on Pop. The series is set to debut on the network in 2020.

The basic cable network has ordered 13-episode fourth season & if the timing works out, it will likely launch off the final season of Pop’s flagship comedy series Schitt’s Creek. Additionally, the network has acquired the linear rights to the first three seasons of One Day at a Time.

CBS Corp wanted to grab the show after its cancellation but there were some hurdles. CBS All Access was an obvious choice but because of the provisions in ODAAT’s Netflix deal, it did not allow it to continue on another SVOD service for years after its cancellation (though it could jump to a broadcast or cable network in a few months).

Another big piece of the deal was ODAAT airing exclusively on Pop but also letting CBS run repeats later in the year similarly to the current showing of CBS All Access‘ The Good Fight on the broadcast network. That run will mark ODAAT‘s return to CBS where the original series aired over 40 years ago. CBS owns Pop so the deal app makes sense in the end.

BTW, One Day at a Time is the first streaming show to be revived by a network after the streamer canceled it. The series will likely thrive on Pop & have a longer life. I know it didn’t make financial sense to renew One Day at a Time for Netflix (they didn’t own it) but for some reason, I see this as a loss for them. It’s a culturally diverse show & critics loved it, giving it a more prestige pedigree.

One Day at a Time, the comedy-drama inspired by Norman Lear’s 1975 series of the same name, follows the life of Penelope Alvarez (Justina Machado), a newly single Army veteran, and her Cuban-American family, as they navigate the ups and downs of life. The series also stars Rita Moreno, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz & Stephen Tobolowsky. All will be returning for season 4.
