Ocean’s Eight Steals The Weekend Box Office

The ladies of Ocean’s Eight easily stole the weekend box office & scored a franchise-best opening in the process.

The film debuted to $41.6 million over the weekend which put it ahead of the openings for the previous Ocean’s films, not accounting for inflation. Women & older moviegoers fueled the opening weekend with females making up nearly 70% of the audience while nearly 70% of ticket buyers were 25 & older. With a budget of $70 million, this is a solid start stateside & its foreign prospects are also bright as it gets a staggered release overseas through July. The film also received a solid B+ CinemaScore which matches the other Ocean’s films except for the second installment which received a B-.

Dropping to second is Solo: A Star Wars Story with $15.7 million. The film dropped 46.4% & brings its domestic total to $176.7 million. This lighter drop ensures that it will hit $200 million stateside but this was a movie that was expected to open close to that over Memorial Day weekend. The film has grossed $312.2 million worldwide but it’s simply not enough for a film with its massive budget and marketing costs.

Falling to third is Deadpool 2 with $14.1 million The film is still going strong with a total of $279.1 million to date and it’s still strong overseas with $655 million worldwide.

Debuting in fourth over expectations is Hereditary with $13.5 million. Strong critical reviews & an effective marketing campaign got butts in the seats but it shows a disconnect between critics & moviegoers. The film is fresh at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes but it received a dismal D+ CinemaScore. The film carries a $12 million budget so it will be ok but I expect a quick fall & then horror cult status when it comes out on Blu-ray & streaming. It should also be noted that this is the largest opening for an A24 release to date.

Rounding out the top five is Avengers: Infinity War with $7.2 million. The film brings its domestic total to $655.1 million & it inches ever so close to $2 billion worldwide.
