As we enter November, the box office tracking for some upcoming high profile releases has come to light and it looks like a few films could enjoy some opening weekend success.
The big battle at the box office takes place over Thanksgiving with four films set to open during the holiday weekend. Leading the pack, so far, is Ralph Breaks The Internet which hits tracking with a $65 million opening for the Wednesday-Sunday period. Ralph 2 is currently tracking the best with younger females, but it’s strong across the board. The first Wreck-It-Ralph opened six years ago during the first weekend in November and made $49 million in 3-days, $56.7 million in five and ended its run at $189.4 million domestic, $471.2 million globally.
Up next is Creed II, which enters tracking at $48 million for the Wednesday-Sunday period. Creed II is playing very strong with African Americans, Hispanics followed by Caucasians. Males are definitely the key demographic but it’s showing itself to be an event film across all demos. Creed II‘s anticipated opening is poised to best the Ryan Coogler-directed 2015 installment which grossed $42.1 million over the Thanksgiving period.
Robin Hood also enters the pack during the Thanksgiving holiday and the Leonardo DiCaprio produced retelling starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, is tracking at $17 million for the Wednesday-Sunday period. On a smaller scale, Green Book also entered tracking for the holiday weekend and the potential Oscar contender starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali is looking at an $8 million opening over the Wednesday-Sunday period.
As we all know, tracking can change as the release date draws closer. A film’s potential box office can swell due to positive early reviews and an aggressive marketing push or it can drop due to an early negative reception. Black Friday is also expected to cut into box office with the huge retail sales day still being a force on the market.
