One of the 70’s most iconic TV show creators has passed away. Garry Marshall died yesterday at the age of 81. Marshall was responsible for the creation of Happy Days, The Odd Couple, Laverne and Shirley, and Mork and Mindy.
TV was not Marshall’s only success as he was responsible for the big screen blockbuster Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The romantic comedy grossed $463 million worldwide. Roberts was nominated for best actress at the Academy Awards, while the film was nominated for a Golden Globe for best comedy/musical and Marshall himself scored a Cesar nomination as Pretty Woman” drew a mention in the French awards’ foreign-film category. Marshall’s accomplishments include the American Comedy Awards’ Creative Achievement Award in 1990, the Writers Guild of America’s Valentine Davies Award in 1995, induction into the Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences’ Hall of Fame in 1997, a Lifetime Achievement Award in Television in 1998, and the American Cinema Editors’ Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award in 2004.
