With last week’s release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney has set yet another record. The studio has earned just over $7 billion at the global box office, which sets a new industry record in one caliber year. The previous industry record of highest-grossing global box office belongs to Universal Studios has the company earned $6.89 billion in 2015.
Films like Furious 7 and Jurassic World helped Universal to the top, however, Disney beat them out this year with a fantastic line-up of films. Aside from Rogue One, Disney pulled in plenty of cash thanks to Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, and Finding Dory. Each of the films earned more than $1 billion at the international box office, and The Jungle Book came very close to that figure. It earned $966.5 million, and Disney pulled in more money thanks to projects like Moana and Doctor Strange. Chairman of Walt Disney Studios Alan Horn stated,
“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations.”
