Quack! Quack! Quack!
This is the sound you could be hearing on the small screen in the near future. ABC Signature Studios is in early development for a series based on the 1990s film franchise about a youth hockey. A network is not yet attached, but the project seems to be moving forward.
ABC Signature Studios, the cable and streaming-focused arm of ABC Studios, is always looking to identify Disney titles and intellectual property that can appeal to a global audience. Sources say The Mighty Ducks was put into development after they were approached by original trilogy screenwriter Steven Brill and original producer Jordan Kerner. Brill is expected to write the script in-house for ABC Signature. If all goes well, ABC Signature would package the project with talent and shop it to streamers this year.
Original star, Emilio Estevez, is not yet attached and there is no word yet if this will be a prequel, sequel or reboot since it’s so early in the development stage.
The Mighty Ducks was released in 1992 and became a hit when it grossed $50.7 million on a $10 million budget. It was followed by two sequels: D2: The Mighty Ducks and D3: The Mighty Ducks which grossed $45.6 million and $22.9 million respectively. The success of the first film inspired producers at Disney to name Anaheim’s 1993 NHL expansion team after the franchise.
