Michelle Williams is stepping into the role of a real-life person once again. The acclaimed actress is set to play astronaut Christa McAuliffe in The Challenger movie. The film is based on the real life 1986 space shuttle tragedy.
The Challenger will follow the true story of McAuliffe, a New Hampshire high school teacher who was selected to join NASA’s Teacher in Space Project. She eventually became part of the astronaut crew on the Space Shuttle Challenger, which launched from Cape Canaveral on January 28, 1986. The shuttle exploded 73 seconds after takeoff, on live TV, killing all seven aboard.
The film is helmed by Martin Zandvliet, director of Land of Mine. For Williams, a four-time Oscar nominee, this is the second time she has portrayed a real-life persona. The actress was Oscar-nominated for playing Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn.
A May 2019 production date is currently being eyed for the project.
