Matt Reeves’ The Batman Trilogy To Introduce A New Joker

Cinephiles are a little over a year away from the return of the Caped Crusader on the big screen. As Matt Reeves’ prepares to commence shooting The Batman after production shut down due to COVID-19, a new rumor has begun to float around regarding the future of the trilogy. A new rumor suggests that Matt Reeves’ planned The Batman trilogy will be bringing a different version of the Clown Prince of Crime, The Joker.

While this can only be seen as a rumor and nothing more at the moment, the news first reported by MovieWeb states,

Matt Reeves, who is writing and directing The Batman, intends to introduce a new Joker in the trilogy. While Warner Bros. hasn’t officially handed the green light to any sequels yet, it was previously reported that Reeves had plans for a three-movie arc and Robert Pattinson signed a multi-picture deal. Assuming the first entry is successful, a sequel is all but guaranteed at this point. That would pave the way for a new Joker to enter the fold.

For those wondering how they’re going to case a new Joker when Jared Leto’s version exists in the DCEU. The upcoming will not take place in the already established DC Extended Universe (DCEU) alongside the likes of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. This will, instead, take place in an alternate universe and will establish an entirely new version of Gotham City disconnected from Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne.

If the addition of the character does indeed happen, it would be the third new version of the iconic DC villain on the big screen in the last 10 years. Jared Leto put on the clown make up in 2016’s Suicide Squad, while Joaquin Phoenix played the part in director Todd Phillips’ Joker which was released last year and earned Phoenix an Academy Award.

The Batman is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
