In tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life, Focus Features and Magnolia Pictures are teaming up to rerelease On the Basis of Sex and the Oscar-nominated documentary RBG in theaters.
Both films are about the iconic U.S. Supreme Court justice, who passed away on September 18th at age 87. The two films will play in theaters beginning Friday alongside availability on on-demand platforms.
Magnolia and Focus also stated they will donate their net proceeds to the ACLU Women’s Right Project, which was co-founded by Ginsburg in 1992. Participant Media, a partner on both films, is mounting a corresponding social tribute campaign, #ThankYouRuth.
RBG (Magnolia, CNN) and On the Basis of Sex (Focus) were both released in 2018. The former became one of the top-grossing political documentaries of all time, and was directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen.
Focus and Magnolia said in a joint statement,
“Justice Ginsburg spent her life upholding fairness, the law, and the rights of all Americans. These films highlight only a small portion of her legacy to screen, but her vast impact on our country goes far beyond them. We hope that moviegoers are re-inspired by her passion, her courage and take that back into the world,”
Speaking on behalf of CNN Films, Amy Entelis, executive producer for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide said,
“We never expected the film to generate the reaction that it did. Many people were unfamiliar with her pre-judicial career as a lawyer for the ACLU and how she played such an essential role in securing equal rights, particularly for women, which meant all Americans benefited.”
