William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” has been a mainstay of mandatory reading in schools for many years and its subject matter is rich with material. The book is a dark tale, following kids that get stranded on an island that try to retain a sense of sanity and society. Unfortunately they devolve into their inherent animalistic natures & things aren’t all sunshine and roses before they’re rescued. The book has been adapted for the screen twice, with the 1963 version being VASTLY superior to the 1990 version. The book is getting the big screen treatment again from Call Me Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino and now the project has finally found a writer.
Patrick Ness will be taking on scripting duties with Ness’ previous credits including A Monster Calls, starring Liam Neeson, and the Chaos Walking trilogy. His works have earned Carnegie Medals twice in his career. The interesting thing is that the previously announced all female spin on the project has been nixed, likely because it didn’t jive too well with fans of the book. I’m personally happy it will stick closer to Golding’s work because the book has enough material on its own merits to warrant a solid feature adaptation.
Guadagnino last brought the Suspiria remake to the big screen while Ness, in addition to A Monster Calls and Chaos Walking, which stars Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, also created and wrote the 2016 Doctor Who spinoff Class.
