Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Exceeds Box Office Tracking To Take The Number One Spot

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom took a bite out of the weekend box office and while it didn’t match or exceed the opening of its predecessor, it still exceeded tracking and put up respectable numbers.

Heading into the weekend the dino sequel was looking at a $130 million opening but the film was able to top that with an opening of $150 million. The opening is down 28% compared to the $208.8 million debut for its 2015 predecessor but the sequel overcame a few hurdles to open this big. Critics weren’t too kind to the film, giving it a 50% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes but the sequel clearly proved to be critic proof as it was gifted a stellar “A-” CinemaScore from opening night audiences. The film also had to deal with a strong weekend two showing from Incredibles 2 which likely shared some of the family audience. Needless to say, this opening is pretty good and it makes a third film a definite lock especially since the film has already put up giant numbers overseas. In its third weekend in international release the movie added 17 new markets, debuting at #1 in 16 of them. Overall the weekend delivered an estimated $106.7 million from 68 total markets for an overseas total of $561.5 million. New markets include Mexico ($12.3 million), Brazil ($9.2 million) and Australia ($7.9 million) with China still leading the way totaling $202.6 million as it begins its second weekend in release. The film will release in no new major markets next weekend with Japan debuting on July 13. The film’s worldwide total currently stands at $711.5 million on a $170 million budget.

Incredibles 2 was no slouch in second, despite dropping 55.7% from its record breaking opening last weekend. The film grossed $80.9 million over the weekend and brought its domestic total to $350 million after only ten days of release. The animated sequel  opened this weekend in China, India and Thailand and brought in an estimated $56.8 million over the weekend from approximately 44% of the overall international market for an overseas gross just shy of $135 million. The film’s opening in China reached an estimated $21.2 million, the largest ever opening for a Pixar title in China. The top market remains Mexico with an estimated $23.5 million followed by China, Australia ($15m), Russia ($10.4m), Argentina ($6.7m) and Colombia ($6.2m). Combined, Incredibles 2‘s worldwide total currently stands at $485.1 million.

Holding remarkably well in third is Ocean’s Eight which dropped 38.6% to $11.6 million. The female demographic is really driving this film and it has continued to post good numbers during the week. The film has grossed $100.3 million at the domestic box office and its staggered overseas release is paying off as well as it has brought its worldwide total to $171 million on a $70 million budget. Ocean’s Nine here we come!

Tag held ok in fourth place with a drop of 45% for a $8.2 million for its second weekend. The drop could’ve definitely been higher since the opening was a tad soft last week but with a budget of $28 million and a current domestic gross of $30.3 million, it’s going to prove to be a modest hit for Warner Bros.

Roudning out the top five is Deadpool 2 with $5.2 million. The film had another great hold with a drop of 39.5%. The holds for Deadpool 2 have been impressive because despite increased competition, the film is still holding its own. The film has now grossed $304.1 million at the domestic box office and $707.1 million worldwide.
