Say what you want about the Venom movie but it overcame a negative critical reception to become one of the biggest hits of the year & it just hit another significant milestone.
Sony’s Venom crossed $800 million at the worldwide box office as it brought its global tally to $822.5 million over the weekend. A lot of the continued success is coming from a great run in China where the film has grossed $242.9 million. Venom is now the second highest-grossing superhero origin movie ever globally, behind Black Panther.
Venom looked like it was poised for disaster when it was released back in October. Critics didn’t like what they saw and granted it with a rotten score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes but moviegoers were much more kind to the film which lead to it opening to the largest October debut of all-time with $80.3 million. The film has gone on to gross $211.7 million to date at the domestic box office and its global tally ranks it as the fifth highest grossing film of 2018.
