The sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is looking to dominate the holiday season once again next year. Sony Pictures has announced that the official release date for the sequel will be December 13, 2019.
Sony is positioning the film in a rather bold way as the untitled movie will open a week before Star Wars: Episode IX launches. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle held up quite well a few months ago when it was released five days after Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The reboot/sequel eventually took the top spot at the box office from The Last Jedi so Sony must feel pretty confident in their ability to hold their own against the popular franchise.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a bit of a surprise hit when it was released last December. The film grossed $404 million domestically (becoming Sony’s biggest domestic hit in the process) and $557 million overseas. After Jumanji took the top spot during its fifth weekend in play, the film stayed in that position for three straight weeks.
The sequel will bring back Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan to reprise their roles, while Jake Kasdan is expected to return as director.
