Jordan Peele is ready to unleash a new tale of terror and it looks like it will make a terrifyingly good debut at the box office according to initial tracking.
Us, Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated follow up to Get Out, is eyeing an opening between $35-40 million according to early box office tracking. That’s just above the $33.3 million to which Peele’s previous $4.5 million-budgeted horror thriller Get Out opened, before turning around a 5.3x multiple of $176 million domestic ($255.4 million worldwide), earning four Oscar nominations including Best Picture and a win for Peele’s Original Screenplay.
Us makes its world premiere at SXSW on Friday, March 8 and Universal specifically moved the film a week later from its original release date of March 15 to March 22. Last year, A Quiet Place took SXSW by storm with its world premiere there, a momentum that carried over to that film’s opening a month later. The John Krasinski-directed horror thriller was expected to open in the $30 million range and posted a $50 million three-day total. I honestly think the same thing will happen with Us as momentum builds closer to its release.
Us finds a family’s serenity turns to chaos when a group of doppelgängers begins to terrorize them. Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, and Noelle Sheldon star.
