Jamie Foxx Set To Star in Spawn

This rumor has been floating around for a bit now but it looks like it’s official: Jamie Foxx is set to star in Spawn, which comes from Blumhouse Productions and will be directed by the creator of the comic book, Todd McFarlane.

Foxx will play the title character, who begins as Al Newman, a member of a CIA black ops team who is betrayed twice. After he is set up by his cohorts to be murdered, Newman is double-crossed in Hell. It is there where he is convinced to become a Hellspawn warrior in exchange for being able to be reunited with his wife. Because of this choice, Spawn finds himself stuck in a demonic creature shell and discovers that his wife has moved on and married his friend.

The comic book was a huge seller in the 90s which led to it being previously adapted into an animated film and a live-action motion picture with Michael Jai White playing the character. The live-action film wasn’t too well received by critics or fans but McFarlane has always been reached out to about taking another stab at a new adaptation. Others who have received out resulted in creative issues between them and McFarlane but this lead to him going for his own low-budget version and its gritty tone made Blumhouse Productions the perfect home for the project. The budget is said to be in the $10-12 million range, with Blumhouse maintaining its approach to micro-budgeted films.

How did Jamie Foxx get involved you might ask?  Apparently, Foxx approach McFarlane five years ago with an idea he had for Spawn and McFarlane never forgot that encounter. McFarlane said when he wrote the script, he only had Foxx in mind and now it’s all coming together in a real way. Blumhouse chief Jason Blum had this to say about casting Jamie Foxx:

“We are thrilled Jamie Foxx will be playing the title role in our movie adaptation of Spawn. He is an incredible actor and a huge fan of the Spawn Universe that Todd McFarlane created. With the depth of talent Jamie can commit to the role and Todd at the helm bringing the world of Spawn to life, we could not be more excited for this film.”

No word as to when filming will commence but here is a picture of Todd McFarlane and Jamie Foxx to commemorate the union:
