Not even a global pandemic can stop the behemoth known as Grey’s Anatomy from shooting its seventeenth season on the air. The cast is expected to reconvene for their first (virtual) table read today, and shooting is expected to begin on September 8.
Given the uncertainty of safety protocols and ever-changing status of reopenings in Los Angeles, where Grey’s Anatomy is filmed, these dates are tentative and could change but all signs point to this being on the right track. General Hospital shoots on the same studio lot as Grey’s Anatomy and since filming resumed back in mid-July on the soap, there have been no COVID-19 related stops and production has been smooth. I imagine the same will be the same for Grey’s Anatomy.
Grey’s Anatomy was one of the first series to shut down production in March amid a fast-growing coronavirus outbreak. The drama had just wrapped episode 21 of its 25-episode 16th season when filming was suspended. There was talk about incorporating some of the leftover stories into season 17 but there hasn’t been any hard confirmation on that just yet. What is known is that, like its fellow medical dramas, Grey’s Anatomy is expected to incorporate the ongoing pandemic in its storylines for the upcoming season.
