Grease Spinoff, Rydell High, Headed To HBO Max

Grease is still the word! It has been announced that HBO Max has ordered the Grease spinoff series, Rydell High. Grease: Rydell High was given a series order from the upcoming streamer and it’s a musical series inspired by the 1978 film.

The spinoff will reimagine the global phenomenon with familiar and new faces. It’s to be set in and around the world of Rydell High and has been given this official description from HBO Max:

“It’s still the 1950s, a world that rocks with big musical numbers from the period combined with new original songs as well. It’s the peer pressures of high school, the horrors of puberty, and the rollercoaster of life in middle America with a modern sensibility that will bring it to life for today’s musical lovers.”

Grease is making a bit of a comeback in the industry. Along with this spinoff series, Picturestart and Paramount Pictures are in development on a feature film prequel to Grease, entitled Summer Lovin’. It’s no surprise that Grease still resonates with fans as the movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John was the highest-grossing live-action musical of all time before the Disney reboots of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King. Its soundtrack has also sold more than 8 million copies in the U.S. alone.
