We’re going to have to wait a little longer to see Godzilla and Kong stomp it out at the box office. It has been announced that Warner Bros. is shifting Godzilla Vs. Kong from March 13 to November 20, 2020.
On paper, moving the film to the pre-Thanksgiving frame makes it look like they’re positioning it to be a true hit film but many suspect the move is to allow even more time between the release of the film and last summer’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which majorly underperformed at the box office. The film grossed $110.5 million domestically and $385.9 million worldwide but carried a reported $170-200 million budget, not including marketing costs. It’s a smart move to distance the film from that underperformance and maybe give audiences time to really want to see the two monsters go head to head.
On its new date, Godzilla Vs. Kong will face off against Sony’s Kristen Stewart vehicle, Happiest Season, an untitled Amblin movie, and Sylvester Stallone’s movie Samaritan. The March 13 release date it once had is now only occupied by an untitled Blumhouse movie.
