Frozen 2 Dominates Thanksgiving Day & Black Friday

I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend! It looks like some of you have spent the last couple of days going to the movies because the box office is on fire and Frozen 2 is still leading the way.

On Thanksgiving Day, Frozen 2 grossed $14.7 million, which is the second-best for any film on the holiday after Catching Fire‘s $14.9 million. I stated previously that Thanksgiving Day is the weakest of the holiday 5-day frame because business doesn’t pick up until the evening when families are done feasting for the day. Things certainly picked up for Frozen 2 on Black Friday as it surged to $34.1 million. The Friday gross still has Frozen 2 making $129 million+ for the 5-day frame if these numbers hold throughout the rest of the weekend. The sequel is obviously working with the demo and I wouldn’t be surprised if the folks at Disney weren’t already discussing Frozen 3.

Knives Out is no slouch in second with a Thanksgiving Day gross of $6.2 million. The film was down 25% from its Wednesday opening which is a solid hold for the film and shows that word of mouth for the critically-acclaimed whodunit is very strong. Things were even better for Knives Out on Friday with a gross of $10.66 million. The trajectory’s on has it besting its $25 million+ 5-day tracking in a big way with at least $40 million+ if these numbers continue to hold. Knives Out is excelling due to its great reviews & ensemble cast. Some say there are no longer stars that drive box office but if selected and packaged right, an ensemble film with an eclectic cast can attract various demos, something Knives Out is proving this weekend.

Queen & Slim is also performing well. On Black Friday, the film grossed $4.3 million and is looking at a 5-day weekend of about $15 million, also besting its initial tracking. Queen & Slim is a film that isn’t going to necessarily blow the gates open and the grosses here indicate a slow burn that is actually benefitting the $17 million as word of mouth continues to grow. The subject matter is a tough sell over the more family-friendly Thanksgiving holiday so its performance is quite good given those factors.
