Mnths after Paramount Pictures decided to shelve Sonic the Hedgehog for a total redesign of its titular character, after a large amount of backlash regarding Sonics look, SEGA fans will finally get to see the movie in theaters this Friday, February 14th. Recently speaking with Digital Spy, director Jeff Fowler talked about his anxiety in regard to the CGI overhaul, which caused a delay. Fowler stated,
“I think it had been about five months that had passed since the first trailer. We had worked very hard on our updates to the character. It was definitely a little bit of like, ‘Oh man, what happens if they don’t like this?'” he said. “But really, everyone that saw it internally as I was working on the film, just responded so positively. It really felt like, once we shared it with the fans, they would really embrace it and be excited about it.”
It looks after a redesign and early press release, the film actually sounds like a crowd-pleasing surprise hit after the first reactions hit social media.
#SonicMovie was fun, silly and charming. It was a nostalgic treat to see Jim Carrey go full 110% 90s Jim Carrey again. Ben Schwartz was perfectly cast. The new design looked great. Sonic fans will enjoy it. pic.twitter.com/M47Ijc8OR4

I will say I went into #SonicMovie with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had. Ben Schwartz is totally endearing as the little space ‘hog, James Marsden brings the necessary heart, and Jim Carrey devours the scenery per usual. pic.twitter.com/R0IS7KuetU

#SonicMovie was really enjoyable. The movie does a great job bringing Sonic to the big screen in a fun, fast paced adventure. Jim Carrey also was solid as Robotnik and his banter with Sonic was perfect. Make sure you race to the theater when this comes out! pic.twitter.com/UZsqZVmHc4

I’m pretty sure #SonicMovie is the best video game movie yet.
I went in with pretty low expectations and ended up really enjoying it. Full review later! pic.twitter.com/FQ3Rbd6ohL

Ok, so I went into the #SonicMovie w/ low expectations. But it was genuinely SO GOOD. I got Detective Pikachu vibes from it: perfect for kids but could still appeal to the older generation fandom. Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik stole the show & Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic was perfect. pic.twitter.com/VEMxc2W3zH
