As was expected, Fast 9 shifted off of its April 2021 date and has moved to Memorial Day weekend 2021. The news came hours after the James Bond film No Time To Die was moved from November of this year into Fast 9’s original April 2021 spot.
In March, F9 became among the first tentpoles to be delayed amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Univeral delaying it a year to April 2021. The reality is, two big tentpoles like a 007 film & a Fast & Furious movie can’t open the same weekend, therefore, F9 had to vacate the spot. At least the new date isn’t too much of a wait and, if moviegoing is remotely normal in 2021, the Memorial Day weekend frame could prove very successful for the ninth entry of the franchise. Also making the move necessary is the fact that Universal is handling overseas business on No Time to Die as well.
Thew new date for F9 puts it in a weekend spot already occupied by Disney’s live-action Cruella starring Emma Stone in the title role and the Paramount Mark Wahlberg movie Infinite. Justin Lin returns to direct F9 with a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Cardi B, and Ozuna.
