Far From Home Will Easily Hold Off New Releases This Weekend

Spider-Man: Far From Home rescued the summer box office with a record-breaking $185 million 6-day debut last weekend and our favorite wall-crawler will easily maintain that spot against a pair of new releases.

Good word of mouth and solid critical response will keep Spider-Man’s momentum going with those who missed it last weekend giving it a shot while fans opting to see the film again. Avengers: Endgame benefitted similarily from repeat viewings and since the competition is slim this weekend, this will automatically be the choice again for moviegoers until The Lion King roars onto the scene next weekend. The movie has already amassed $603.7 million worldwide as of this writing and it’s likely to become the next billion-dollar earner for Marvel by the time it ends its run. I’m predicting about $45-50 million this weekend.

Our first new release is Crawl, which comes from director Alexandre Aja and is produced by Sam Raimi. The movie centers on a family who is trapped during a hurricane and is threatened by deadly alligators. The trailers for this didn’t appeal to me much but, despite there being no Rotten Tomatoes score as of this writing, the film has earned solid buzz from those who have caught advanced screenings of the film. It’s said to be a solid creature feature with plenty of thrills. I’m predicting about $13-14 million for the weekend.

Last on the block is Stuber, a buddy cop comedy that Disney acquired from Fox during their merger which technically means this is their first R-rated release in 6 years. The movie stars Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani in the lead roles, with Nanjiani playing an Uber driver who must cart around Bautista, who is playing a cop that recently had eye surgery. Both performers are very likable but the film has been met with mixed responses from critics (it’s currently 44% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes). Some tracking has this pulling ahead of Crawl but comedy has been such a tough sell at the box office that I kind of have my doubts that it will do so. It’ll be close but I’m going with $12.5 million for the weekend.
