Crazy Rich Asians Wins Labor Day Weekend Box Office & Spends Third Week At Number One

Moviegoers are continuing to embrace Crazy Rich Asians which won the Labor Day weekend box office and had another impressive hold that shows that it’s a true word of mouth hit.

The film delivered a three day gross of $22.2 million and estimated $28.3 million with the Labor Day holiday factored in. The three-day portion of the weekend represents a slim dip of only 10.9% as the film has grossed $117 million to date. The film topped the $115.2 million of 2017’s Girls Trip, to become the most successful live-action comedy in at least two years and it’s the most successful studio romantic comedy since The Proposal back in 2009. That film grossed $164 million by the end of its run and with the holds Crazy Rich Asians has been having, I have no doubt that the film will match that total and could possibly eclipse it.

Maintaining the number two spot is The Meg with $10.5 million over three days and $13.4 million over four days. The three-day portion of the weekend is only down 17.7% from last weekend which is the film’s most successful hold to date. The film has grossed over $120 million at the domestic box office and is still killing it overseas with a worldwide total of $463 million.

Coming in third is Mission: Impossible – Fallout with $7 million over the three-day portion of the weekend and $9 million over four days. The three-day weekend drop is only 13.4% weekend to weekend, which is another solid hold for a film that moviegoers truly embraced this summer. The film has grossed over $206 million and is very close becoming the biggest film of the franchise as the final gross of $215 million for Mission: Impossible II is within striking distance. Fallout also had a great weekend internationally with an opening in China that hit $77.3 million. The worldwide total has now hit $647 million and it’s only $12 million shy of Rogue Nation’s final global gross which currently is the biggest international release of the franchise. Rogue Nation is soon to give up that title to Fallout.

The fourth and fifth spot at the box office is pretty close to call but as of now with estimates, Searching finishes fourth with $6,070,000 over three days while Operation Finale finished in fifth with $6,019,000 over three days. For Searching, the film should finish with roughly $7 million over four days while Operation Finale could jump ahead of it with $7.7 million. Operation Finale actually opened on Wednesday and it has grossed about $9.5 million since that date.
