Aquaman Continues Holiday Box Office Dominance With $16.9 Million On Wednesday

Aquaman is still the king of the holiday season with another number one finish on Wednesday that bested the take of The Last Jedi last year.

Aquaman grossed $16.9 million on Wednesday, a figure that bests the Wednesday take of several tentpole films such as  Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($16.88 million), Batman Begins’ opening day ($15 million), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($14.9 million), Black Panther ($14.6 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($13.7 million), Justice League ($10.4 million), Suicide Squad ($9.8 million), Wonder Woman ($9.3 million) and Batman v. Superman ($8.1 million). Of the major superhero films, the Wednesday gross just falls short of The Dark Knight’s Wednesday of $18.3 million and is just shy of Avengers: Infinity War ($16.966 million). After six days Aquaman has grossed $122.6M, which is $300,000 ahead of Justice League over the same period. Aquaman should further the distance between itself and the DC mash-up as it’s expected to have a pretty healthy second weekend.

Mary Poppins Returns held well in second place on Wednesday with $10.9 million, down just 5% from Christmas Day. After eight days, Mary Poppins Returns has grossed $60.8 million to date. Staying put in third is Bumblebee with $6.2 million, down 29% from Christmas Day. The film is expected to have a second weekend even with its first which is solid news for the best-reviewed film of the holiday season. Bumblebee has grossed $40.5 million to date.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came in fourth on Wednesday with $5.9 million, actually up 5% from its Christmas Day gross. The film has grossed $79.6 million thus far and should be at $100 million by end of Sunday.

Holmes & Watson came down to earth after a decent Christmas Day start with $3.5 million, down 45% from the holiday. The film’s total is just shy of $10 million and I think the wheels will continue to fall off as the film is 4% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes and was graced with a “D+” CinemaScore from audiences.

Vice took seventh place the day after Christmas with $2.9 million for a gross of $7.7 million thus far. Vice’s success will be based solely on the awards attention it gets so it’s in for the long haul at the box office of it can gain momentum with a few Oscar nominations.
