Avengers: Infinity War has cleared the $300 million mark in the five days, tying the record that was originally set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December of 2015.
On Tuesday, Infinity War grossed an estimated $23.5 million, down 5% from Monday’s $24.7 million which was originally estimated at $25.2 million The actual Monday gross still gives it the largest Monday in the month of April in April by a significant margin (Furious 7 had the Monday, April record with $14 million). Its running U.S.-Canada total stands at $305.9 million.
Infinity War is easily the best Tuesday ever for an MCU title, beating Black Panther ($20.8 million), and for a May Tuesday, besting 2012’s Avengers ($17.6 million, May 8). Infinity War’s weekdays are very strong, but the reason why we don’t see them breaking out higher than their current levels (for example, Force Awakens owns the Tuesday record with $37.3 million) is because there’s still a number of kids in school: ComScore says there aren’t any K-12 schools off, and only 8% of all colleges are out.
Infinity War is going to see a large second weekend as it faces little to no competition and we will explore its weekend prospects in our box office predictions tomorrow.
