Avengers: Infinity War Rules Mother’s Day Weekend At The Box Office

Those moms just can’t get enough of Avengers: Infinity War! I kid but due to no other action competition at the box office, the Marvel sequel ruled the box office for the third weekend in a row and it made a big splash in China where it opened on May 11.

Avengers: Infinity War grossed $62 million over the weekend. This pushes its domestic total to a staggering take of $548 million.  It’ll be interesting to see how the film holds up against Deadpool 2 this weekend as that film is likely to take some of its audience but I still think it will hold decently, despite the competition.

Internationally, the film’s success continues to grow with an amazing gross in China that came in at $200 million over the weekend. This is the second largest debut there in local currency  and it helped bring the film’s overseas total to $1.059 billion. Worldwide the film has grossed $1.6 billion and is just shy of the $1.67 billion worldwide total held by Jurassic World. Once it passes that film, it will be the biggest worldwide summer release of all-time.

Landing in second is the Melissa McCarthy comedy, Life of the Party, which grossed an estimated  $17.8 million. This is on the lower-end of what McCarthy usually opens to but it’s not a horrible start either. It comes in a little below tracking and it scored a “B” CinemaScore so it indicates decent but not stellar word of mouth. The film skewed heavily female as expected and definitely saw some benefits from Mother’s Day on Sunday but where it goes from here, only time will tell.

Also taking advantage of the Mother’s Day audience was the Gabrielle Union-led, Breaking In, which grossed $17.6 million for third place. Estimates had the film at $16.5 million but it had a stronger Sunday that originally reported and actually come pretty close to taking second at the box office. Even if the film nosedives next weekend, the movie is already a hit because it carries a budget of only $6 million.

Holding well in fourth place is Overboard which grossed $9.8 million. The film only dropped 32.8% and brings its domestic total to $29.3 million. Considering a new comedy opened this weekend, the hold for the remake is pretty impressive and ensures it will become a modest hit that no one really saw coming.

Rounding out the top five is A Quiet Place which grossed $6.4 million. That’s only a drop of 16.8% which are amazing holds for a horror film, especially one that has been out for several weeks. The film brings its domestic total to $169.6 million on a $17 million budget.
