The 2019 box office needed some saving and leave it to The Avengers to do just that. Everyone knew Avengers: Endgame was going to open big, hell, I predicted a $300 million opening and thought I was throwing the hail mary like other box office experts that insisted that gross was a possibility. Turns out, not only was it a possibility but they even exceeded that crazy number for the biggest domestic and worldwide opening in box office history.
Endgame was originally estimated to gross $350 million over three days. This a gross that some big tentpole releases finish with by the end of their runs. Apparently, that estimate wasn’t enough and it was reported that the gross was actually $356 million over three days. $356 million not enough? Turns out the final and actual total for the weekend was $357.1 million over three days at the North American box office. The final gross is $100 million higher than the debut of Avengers: Infinity War which broke the opening weekend record last year with a debut of $257.6 million. All the talk of the three-hour runtime didn’t affect any of the box office and the fact that the film surged higher than Infinity War, proves that the brand grows and isn’t just rejected to a set group of fans. Moviegoers are continuing to discover the MCU and everyone was waiting on pins and needles to see how it would all in.
Critics loved the film at a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and fans really loved it as they graced it with an “A+” CinemaScore. This is the third such grade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside The Avengers and Black Panther. Word of mouth for the film should be massive and since an opening weekend like this is very unheard of, it’s hard to predict where Endgame ends up but it’s going to be fascinating to watch its progress.
Now let’s get into the foreign box office, which also broke records. The film opened to $866 million from foreign territories. This is over $400 million more than the previous record holder The Fate of the Furious and the $1.2 billion in global ticket sales is nearly double the previous record of $640.5 million set by, you guessed it, Avengers: Infinity War from just last year. Endgame is the fastest film to $1 billion worldwide ever and it was led by performances in the following locations: China ($330.5 million), UK ($56 million), Korea ($46.9 million), Mexico ($31.9 million) and Australia ($31.2 million). BoxOfficeMojo brokedown all the records that Endgame actually broke and here they are:

Marvel also made a stir in second place as Captain Marvel benefitted from some Endgame catch up. The film shot back up to number two and grossed $8.3 million, down just 8.7% from the previous weekend. Captain Marvel has now grossed $413.8 million at the domestic box office and internationally Captain Marvel added over $2 million for a global weekend topping $10 million and a global gross that now stands at $1.11 billion, making it the #24 overall global release of all-time.
Falling hard to third is The Curse of La Llorona which grossed $8 million. The film dropped a massive, even by horror standards, 69.5% in weekend two and some of that can be blamed on Avengers dominating the screens or the film was simply a one-weekend wonder. The good news is that the film cost only $9 million to make and has grossed $41.8 million at the domestic box office which means the studio is still happy with the result. Internationally, the film brought in nearly $8 million this weekend for an overseas gross that now stands at $45.7 million for a global take totaling $87 million.
Breakthrough takes fourth with $6.8 million which was down 39.7% from the previous weekend. It’s a little larger than expected and it’s clear that the film benefitted from the Easter moviegoers last week but the faith-based film has grossed $26.6 million to date and that’s on a $20 million budget which will make it become a modest hit by the time it’s all said and done.
Rounding out the top five is Shazam! which grossed $5.5 million. I mentioned that Shazam! would be hurt the most by Endgame and it certainly was, dropping 66.1% from the previous weekend. Shazam! made a lot of its money ahead of Endgame so it’s basically in the clear. The domestic total is now at $131.2 million and a final in the $145 million range is a possibility. Internationally, the film added an estimated $5.4 million from 80 markets in release for an overseas total that now tops $215 million and a global tally that stands at $346.4 million.
Check out the full top ten results below and just to bring it back to Endgame again, the film represented over 90% of the entire weekend market at the box office, an impressive feat indeed.
