Talk of the Avatar sequels has been going on for quite some time now that it almost feels like they’re never going to come. Well, it was announced today that we have to wait a year longer for the sequels to begin kicking off on the big screen.
Avatar 2 was originally slated to open on December 18, 2020, and it will now hit theaters on December 17, 2021. An Avatar film will play the holiday period every other year thereafter beginning with Avatar 3, which has been moved back two years, from its previous December 2021 release date to Dec. 22, 2023. Avatar 4 has been delayed a year, from December 2024 to Dec. 19, 2025; and Avatar 5 has been shifted back two years from December 2025 to Dec. 17, 2027. The Avatar sequels have a long history of being delayed, with filmmaker James Cameron saying he needed more time to refine the technology for the films.
Avatar has been in the news a bit lately because many think Avengers: Endgame has a strong shot of dethroning the films as the biggest global release of all time. Endgame is already number 2 on the all-time list after only 2 weeks of release and is about $600 million away from Avatar’s global take. Fans have begun to troll James Cameron after Endgame opened to its stellar numbers and many of them are seeing Endgame numerous times in theaters to do their part to see Endgame take down Avatar. A lot of fan animosity stems from comments Cameron made back in April of 2018:
“I’m hoping we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon. Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”
If Endgame happens to take down Avatar, Cameron will four chances with his Avatar sequels to try to get the spot back, if he ever gets around to finishing them.
