Madea’s swan song got off to an impressive start in Thursday night previews as A Madea Family Funeral pulled solid numbers to kick off the weekend.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral earned a series record of $1.1 million last night from previews from 2,100 venues. I predicted an opening weekend as high as $22 million but the preview number suggests that it could surge a bit higher this weekend, especially if the film can crossover from its target demographic.
The preview number is higher than the $855,000 earned by Boo! A Madea Halloween and a notch higher than Perry’s Paramount thriller last fall Acrimony which made $1 million. The best opening for a Madea movie is 2009’s Madea Goes to Jail with $41 million, followed by 2006’s A Madea Family Reunion ($30 million) and 2016’s Boo! A Madea Halloween ($28.5 million). I’m guessing it falls somewhere around $25 million given the preview number with a chance to go a bit higher should word of mouth be decent for the film.
