World Series Opener Wins Tuesday Demo For Fox But Opens To 5-Year Low

Fox was the clear winner for Tuesday ratings last night with Game 1 of the World Series featuring the Washington Nationals’ 5-4 win over the Houston Astros but despite the victory, the game was down from its performance last year.

On Fox, game one of the World Series averaged 12.19 million viewers and a 2.9 in the 18-49 demo. Tuesday’s audience is the lowest for a World Series opener since 2014 (also 12.19 million) and is off by 11 percent from last year’s 13.76 million viewers. Fox isn’t complaining since they dominated the night across all the networks but it was also very telling that the game didn’t exactly affect other series which either saw slight gains or stayed steady.

On NBC, This Is Us scored a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 7.06 million viewers, up from 1.5 and 6.72 million for its initial airing last week. New Amsterdam (0.9, 5.13 million) had its best 18-49 rating since premiere week, and The Voice improved a little in total viewers to 8.07 million while holding at 1.3 in adults 18-49. In a time when ratings are eroding on some networks, the NBC Tuesday lineup is showing a lot of promise and it should be noted that This Is Us and New Amsterdam more than double their same-day ratings with a week of delayed and digital viewing.

On ABC, Mixed-ish and Black-ish each posted a 0.7 in adults 18-49, up a 10th of a point each over last week, and improved a little in total viewers as well (3.09 and 2.73 million viewers respectively).

On The CW, The Flash (1.38 million viewers, 0.5)  was steady week-to-week as was Arrow which hit a 0.3 demo score once again but it did slip in total viewers 773,000.

On CBS, NCIS (11.34 million viewers, 1.1 in adults 18-49), FBI (8.87 million, 0.8) and NCIS: New Orleans (6.64 million, 0.7) all grew a little in viewers over last week while holding steady in adults 18-49.

Recapping Tuesday night ratings, it all networks should be applauded for holding well against Game 1 of the World Series so I’m declaring no losers for last night, a first this season.
