It’s not the return of NBC’s Hannibal but I guess this will have to do. CBS has closed a deal for a Silence of the Lambs sequel series named Clarice, a crime drama project based on the famous Thomas Harris character Clarice Starling.
The show is getting a big series commitment from CBS, despite the fact that it’s not going straight to series just yet. The pilot script is already written and it will film a pilot before a series order decision is made but a writer’s room has already been set up, and there is a lot of enthusiasm for the title and the premise at the network. Reportedly, the female lead on Clarice will be one of the most sought after roles this pilot season.
Clarice is set in 1993, a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs. The series is a deep dive into the untold personal story of Clarice Starling, as she returns to the field to pursue serial murderers and sexual predators while navigating the high stakes political world of Washington, D.C. As of now, there is no plan for Hannibal Lecter to be a part of the series.
“The Silence of the Lambs” was published in 1988, and the movie adaptation hit theaters in 1991, directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Jodie Foster as Clarice. It swept the top categories at the 64th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Foster. A sequel followed in 2001 named Hannibal, set 10 years after the events of the first film, but Foster declined to reprise her role as Clarice and was replaced by Julianne Moore.
