Fresh off the opening weekend of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros.. has fast-tracked Wonder Woman 3 into early development with both Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins set to return.
The news of the third film comes as Wonder Woman 1984 opened to a pandemic-best 3-day opening of $16.7 million with a current worldwide total of $85 million. The film is a long way from recouping its $200 million budget but this opening was the best-case scenario for Warner Bros. and there are still the stats waiting in the wings in regards to its performance on the HBO Max streaming service, where it also launched on the same day as its theatrical release. Early numbers, according to the studio, seem to indicate that the film did perform well on the platform. Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, had this to say about the third film:
“As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women – Gal and Patty – who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy.”
On the HBO Max side of things, WarnerMedia reports that Wonder Woman 1984 was viewed by “nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers viewing the film on the day of its arrival, along with millions of wholesale subscribers who have access to HBO Max via a cable, wireless, or other partner services. HBO Max also saw the total viewing hours on Friday more than triple in comparison to a typical day in the previous month.” Given that success, coupled with the as good as could be expected box office opening, it seems like the perfect time to announce that a third film is coming and that the two major creative forces behind the project, Gadot and Jenkins, will also be on board.
