Columbus Day gave Venom and A Star Is Born more reasons to celebrate their weekend box office victories. Both films saw stellar ticket sales on Monday which led to an October record for the day.
Venom earned $9.6 million on Monday while A Star Is Born took in $6.8 million. Both posted the top showing ever for a Monday in October, aided by the Columbus Day holiday in the U.S. and the Thanksgiving holiday in Canada. The previous record was held by Gravity in 2013 which grossed $6.1 million on its first Monday in October.
Over the weekend, Venom overcame critical jabs from critics and grossed a robust $80.2 million, beating the previous October opening weekend record for 2013’s Gravity. A Star Is Born was no slouch either and catered to the older female demographic which elevated the film to $42.9 million over the weekend. By the end of Monday, Venom had $89.9 million in the bank while A Star Is Born has minted $51 million.
